How to Tell If a Vintage Piece Is Authentic: A Buyer's Guide

Buying vintage online means trusting your eyes — and the seller's. Here's what we actually check before a piece goes live on Cloaker Store, so you know what to look for yourself.

1. Check the label era

Brand logos, tag fonts and care labels change over time. A 90s Nike swoosh tag looks different from a 2000s one; an old Oakley box logo won't match a modern print. Cross-reference the label style against the decade the piece is supposed to be from.

2. Look at construction, not just the logo

Vintage pieces from the 90s-00s were often stitched differently than fast-fashion reproductions: heavier fabric, bar-tacked stress points, woven (not printed) labels on higher-end items. Loose threads or glued patches are a red flag.

3. Materials should match the period

Technical brands like Oakley and Nike ACG used specific fabrics for each era (StormFit, Therma-Fit, early Gore-Tex). If the material feels off for the claimed year, ask the seller for close-up photos of the fabric and any interior tags.

4. Price is a signal

Authentic vintage from sought-after eras rarely sells for pennies. If a "rare 90s" piece is priced far below what similar verified listings go for, that's worth questioning.

5. Buy from sellers who condition-check
